Federal acknowledgement as a private university of applied sciences was gained in 1971. The college in Idstein is the headquarters of the Fresenius schools which over the years have been established in Köln, Hamburg, Frankfurt am Main, München, Düsseldorf and Zwickau. The total number of students at the Fresenius Colleges currently accounts to 5,100.
