The University of Kassel is the most northern university in Hessen. It was founded in 1970 as a combination of a regular university and the more practical university of applied sciences. Today, the university hosts more than 22,000 students and rising. The university is a foundation member of the network of medium-sized universities and has four sites in Kassel.

The student represenatives are defending the interests of students on the university level. They are the voice of the students in talks with the university administration or the public. In addition to political and social issues the representation deals with cultural matters.

The student representation in Kassel is the "allgemeine Studienrenden-Ausschuss" (AStA).
